Artist's Statement
Historically my work has primarily been representational, focused on botanical and animal subjects in straightforward interpretations. I enjoy the challenge of re-creating the beautiful, the loveable and the pleasing, and will always be moved to paint these subjects. However, I am increasingly drawn to the visual interplay of the natural and the human-made. The intense contrast of a tree's shadow cast against a stucco wall on a sunny day is profoundly dynamic to me. Reflections, shadows and silhouettes command my attention and spur me to the challenges of abstraction.
This has resulted in my exploration of the possibilities of collage, which has led me to experiment with the pure and uninhibited creations of children through a sort of decoupage technique. I consider each resulting work to be a collaborative effort between artist-child and artist-adult which I call "kidart, incorporated."
